Rarely these days do we see many upsets quite like what Bristol City pulled off against Manchester United.

The holders are out after the Championship outfit's Korey Smith scored a 93rd-minute winner to send Ashton Gate absolutely berserk.

If Jose Mourinho thought Manchester City's celebrations were raucous after the derby, then it's safe to say he won't have enjoyed the evening one bit.

The Portuguese can't even take comfort from the fact that he made 10 changes, as his starting XI still featured the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, and Marcus Rashford.

Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan also entered the fray, so ultimately there can be no excuses, even if Bristol City were "lucky", - Mourinho's words, not ours.

United fans will have expected their big-name players to make an impact, not least because the game carried extra significance for a few of them.

With the January transfer window just a few weeks away, outings like this one should have been the perfect chance for Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and Mkhitaryan to shine, as all have been linked with the exit at Old Trafford.

The Armenian was under particular scrutiny when he came on as in recent weeks, he hasn't even been making the matchday squad in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old has been getting the 'Luke Shaw' treatment from his manager and has received a few public tellings-off.

However, former United defender Phil Neville insists he sympathises with Mourinho.

Mourinho's right to exile him

Writing for Sky Sports, he criticised the mentality of the current players, and singled out the playmaker in particular.

"Yes, they've spent a lot on players but maybe there are fewer and fewer players of that mentality available. You need to have them in the spine of your team," he said.

"There's a lot of criticism of Jose's treatment of Henrikh Mkhitaryan but he ultimately didn't deliver when he's played. He's not unlucky, he's lucky he gets to play for United.

"Under Sir Alex [Ferguson], if I didn't perform I wasn't in the team. People need to stop sugar-coating it. If you don't perform then you don't get in the team or a new contract, it's not Jose being personal, it's business."

Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are both ahead of the former Borussia Dortmund star in the pecking order, so as it stands, he has a big job on his hands to get regular minutes on the pitch.
