Jimmy Garoppolo's time at the San Francisco 49ers has been fantastic so far, and there will certainly be some fans that have watched the team over the past few games that will be wondering why he wasn't given the starting quarterback job sooner.
The 49ers traded a second-round pick to the New England Patriots for Garoppolo back in October, but he didn't make his debut for the team until Week 12 in the final minutes of the San Francisco's game against the Seattle Seahawks after an injury to C. J. Beathard.
Since then, the 26-year-old has been nothing but great for his new team, winning each of his first three starts for the franchise, defeating the Chicago Bears in Week 13, the Houston Texans in Week 14, and the Tennessee Titans in Week 15.
These past three wins, plus the two he had as a starter with the Patriots, means he has won his first five games as a starter, and this quite an achievement as not many quarterbacks have managed to accomplish this.
In fact, Garoppolo is the first quarterback to win his first five starts since Ben Roethlisberger did it in his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2004.
From what we have seen from his first five career starts, Garoppolo's future in the NFL is bright, but whether or not it will be with the 49ers at the moment isn't a certainty.
While the team did trade a second-round pick for him in October, he will be an unrestricted free agent come the end of the season, as he is yet to sign a contract extension with San Francisco.
It's pretty safe to assume that Garoppolo will sign a new deal with the 49ers, as the team won't want to lose him and get nothing for him in return after trading a second-round pick for him during the season.
However, in order for the quarterback to ever dream of reaching the levels of Roethlisberger and what he has done with the Steelers, the 49ers need to improve around him to support him, especially in key areas such as wide receiver, offensive line, cornerback and edge rusher.
