You get the feeling that Liverpool could do with splashing the cash in the January transfer window.

It's been difficult to put a finger on the Reds' season so far with each attacking masterclass followed by a defensive shambles and vice verse. Jurgen Klopp's men sit in a respectable fourth place but, with a little consistency, their position could look far healthier.

The underpinning issue lies with their back line. Few teams can rival Liverpool for their attack with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho forming the mother of all attacking quartets.

When you turn to the likes of Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan, though, the frailties begin to show and there's no shortage of case studies to support the worries.

You only have to look at the Tottenham defeat to witness the club's susceptibility to individual errors.

That being said, Liverpool also have a potential problem on their hands when it comes to their midfield. Both Coutinho and Emre Can are being heavily with exits to Barcelona and Juventus respectively.

Barcelona look set to fire another series of nine-figure bids over to Merseyside and Can appears torn on a move to Turin or staying put.

If Liverpool's behaviour from the summer is anything to go by, they won't go down without a fight but were one or both players to leave, it would pose a huge problem for Klopp.

It certainly wouldn't be the worst idea to consider back-up plans and the behaviour of bookmakers suggests the Reds have one man in mind.

The man in question is none other than Jack Wilshere.

At the start of the season, Ladbrokes priced Liverpool at 20/1 to be Wilshere's next club with the odds now slashed to 3/1. Only Newcastle United, at 7/4, are above the Reds as second favourites.

Were Wilshere to move to Liverpool, he would be following in the footsteps of ex-teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who turned his back on Arsenal this summer.

Whether or not Arsenal will offer the Englishman a new contract remains in question and Liverpool stand as massive, potential suitors.

There's every reason to suggest Wilshere is a Klopp player, too, with his mix of hard work and talent proving an exciting prospect for the German boss.

The deal still looks ambitious and the ball remains in Arsenal's court but Liverpool could be waiting in the wings to snatch another frustrated Gunner. Watch this space.
