Paul Pogba was part of the Manchester United side that was humbled by Bristol City on Wednesday.

The Frenchman played all 90 minutes as Jose Mourinho’s team, which also included Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, were beaten 2-1 by the Championship side in the Carabao Cup.

Even without Pogba in the starting line-up, United were expected to progress to the semi-final of the competition. With him, it was presumed they would breeze through.

The 24-year-old has raised his level this season and his important to Mourinho can be summed up by one stat.

Since the 4-0 defeat to Chelsea last season, Man United haven’t lost a Premier League fixture that Pogba has started.

That’s 41 matches. They’ve won 27 times, drawn 14 and lost none.

Paul Scholes: Paul Pogba can do a lot better

Manchester City are clearly the best team in the Premier League right now but if the Red Devils are to catch up to them, Pogba has a big part to play.

Easily among the best midfielders in England’s top flight, Paul Scholes believes the £89 million man can take his game to the next level if he stops overcomplicating things on the pitch.

In Scholes’ opinion, Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante has the attributes of the Premier League’s ideal midfielder.

“Paul Pogba can be this box-to-box midfielder, although he can do a lot better, especially score more goals,” Scholes told French magazine So Foot, per the Mirror.

“He has a big range of attributes. He is fast, his passing game is exceptional. I am sure he will cross these levels.

“Mentally, he still has a lot of room to improve to become more consistent. He should especially try not to do so many complicated things.

“He has a high price-tag [£89m] and maybe that gives him the feeling that he has to show off his talent.

“But he doesn't have the ability to dribble past three or four players before hitting it in the top corner. He will never be this type of player and sometimes he tries too much to do things that do not match his qualities.

“If he starts to try to dribble by players, he is no longer himself.”

“The perfect midfielder in the Premier League today is more the style of N'Golo Kante. For me, he can do anything - defend, attacking, dictating the tempo, scoring goals, he can bring the game forward."

Pogba should probably listen to Scholes. He is, after all, one of the finest midfielders to play the game.
