Chesterfield's automatic promotion hopes have been dealt a further blow with news that midfielder Derek Niven could be out for up to six weeks with an ankle injury.

The Spireites' top-three aspirations suffered with a 5-0 home thrashing at the hands of Port Vale at the weekend and now it has emerged the injury that forced Niven off at half-time during that game is worse than initially feared.

Meanwhile, Carlisle striker Gary Madine has returned to the League One club following the end of his month-long loan spell at Saltergate.
