The Shield just can't catch a break right now.

Their highly anticipated reunion failed to occur because of an illness to Roman Reigns, but the silver lining of it all was that we finally got to witness Kurt Angle make his return to the ring.

REUNION

Just as it looked like we were heading for another reunion, Dean Ambrose has been struck down with an injury which has required surgery.

The sad part about all of this is that there is speculation that he could be in danger of missing WrestleMania 34. If rumours are to be believed, then it means it could end up ruining some huge plans for The Lunatic Fringe.

According to several sources, the plan all along was to have Ambrose betray Seth Rollins and Reigns, giving The Kingslayer a taste of his own medicine. The heel turn would have rekindled another rivalry between Rollins and Ambrose which would have culminated at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans.

As of this writing, the timetable for his return is just before the Grandest Stage of Them All. So, there's a possibility that WWE officials might not want to rush such an epic storyline in only a few weeks, as this could make the story lose emotion and overall impact.

WRESTLEMANIA

However, differing reports have suggested that Ambrose could actually be medically cleared before WrestleMania. If his recovery goes perfectly without any issues, then there's a chance that he could be brought back slightly earlier to turn heel and set up the angle with Rollins on television.

The heel turn doesn't come as a huge surprise, as the rumours were followed up by a subtle tease on Monday Night RAW. WWE planted this week when Samoa Joe, Cesaro and Sheamus injured Ambrose's arm to write him off WWE television.

Rather than blaming The Shield's rivals, the blame should fall on Rollins. The interesting dynamic this time, though, is that Ambrose is playing the heel. This is something many thought would happen the first time The Shield would implode.

WWE fans won't be entirely happy with the whole situation, as it means we might not get a lengthy Shield reunion - or a reunion at all. That, combined with the fact that Jason Jordan is replacing Ambrose could result in some disgruntled fans.

Still, The Shield was never going to be a permanent thing. It's just unfortunate that there look to be many twists and turns ahead of the potential heel turn and WrestleMania match.

Here's hoping he can recover fully well ahead of time.
