Harry Kane scored a Boxing Day hat-trick in a 5-2 win over Southampton to take his Premier League tally for 2017 to 39, thus breaking Alan Shearer's record from 1995.

His tally of 56 goals for club and country during the calendar year also took him ahead of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi as Europe's top scorer for 2017.

Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the goalscoring charts in Europe and in 2009 Edin Dzeko was the last player to beat them to be the top goalscorer in a calendar year.

The 24-year-old scored a hat-trick in Saturday's 3-0 win over Burnley and ended the year in style against Southampton on Tuesday lunchtime.

Kane scored a first-half brace before wrapping up his hat-trick with a stunning dinked finish over Fraser Forster.

"It was hard not to think about it going into the game being level [with Messi],” Kane told BT Sport after the 5-2 win.

"As always I wanted to win the game first and foremost but of course I wanted to score as a striker. To get that goal early on and get that record was a great feeling and I could enjoy the rest of the game.

What Kane said to his teammates before kick-off

There's no award for being the leading goalscorer in a calendar year but it clearly meant a lot to Kane anyway.

"I said to the lads before the game to try and set me up," said the Tottenham striker. "And they all did that so I'll have to take them out to dinner or something."

Kane was obviously desperate to end 2017 as Europe's top goalscorer - and he'll be more than happy to buy dinner for all of his teammates.

"This year I would say physically I have improved, recovery from games, getting ready, we have such a busy schedule. Just making sure I'm ready for each game, eating right, recovering right with ice baths. I feel really good. I feel sharp and at my best.

"Just getting more experience should make me a better player anyway."

Pochettino hails his record-breaker

“Harry is world-class,” Pochettino said. “Of course, Messi and Cristiano are different.

"Today – one striker in the world, a specific position – who is better than Harry? It’s difficult to say he’s the best but he’s shown to everyone he’s one of the best. Both of his records are massive – to break the Premier League record set by Alan Shearer and then, if you see that over the last seven, eight or nine years, it’s always Messi and Cristiano and now, it’s Harry as well.”
