Jurgen Klopp has got his man after Liverpool confirm the £75 million signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
The news was first reported by the Telegraph, who claim the clubs have been in discreet negotiations over the past few days.
Manchester City and Chelsea have both expressed an interest in the centre-back in recent months but Van Dijk has always had his sights set on a move to Anfield.
Southampton refused to sell in the summer, even accusing the Reds of a making an illegal approach for the player, but they’ve finally relinquished.
Left out of Southampton’s squad more than once this season, it seemed inevitable that Van Dijk would eventually leave St Mary’s.
Mauricio Pellegrino will now reinvest the money - a world-record fee for a defender - in his squad in the January transfer window.
The fee is a hefty one but Liverpool fans do not care. The defence has been much improved of late and Van Dijk’s arrival will only serve to bolster the back line.
Carragher has tweeted about Van Dijk
One man who is pleased with his arrival is Jamie Carragher, who wasted no time getting on social media after the news broke.
Carragher hit out at Van Dijk’s recent performances on Monday Night Football last week, saying the Netherlands international is playing “Championship football” right now.
“I know what he’s capable of but he is nowhere near that player right now,” Carragher added.
And Carragher made light of his comments in his reaction on Twitter.
“That @SkySportsMNF piece last week on VVD worked!!!!!,” Carragher wrote.
Carragher replied when asked: 'Is VVD better than you were?'
He followed that up by responding to a Liverpool supporter who asked him whether Van Dijk is a better player than he was.
“Better in the air than me, quicker than me, more composed & doesn’t score own goals!” he joked, poking fun at his penchant for putting the ball into his own net during his Liverpool days.
Former Southampton forward Matt Le Tissier, who annoyed Liverpool fans on Boxing Day by claiming Van Dijk is better than Liverpool at his best, also spoke about the impending transfer.
When asked whether the defender is worth £75m, Le Tissier replied: “Pre January 2017, yes.”
