Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has been making plenty of noise on Twitter since the Reds captured the club record signing of Virgil van Dijk.

The 26-year-old Dutch defender will join when the transfer window opens on January 1 after Southampton accepted Liverpool's £75m bid.

Jurgen Klopp had desperately attempted to sign Van Dijk in the summer but Southampton took up a 'not for sale' position.

He's been used sparingly since handing in a transfer request and the Saints decided that the time was right to sell.

Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea were all reportedly interested in a January move for the wantaway former Celtic star - but he was confirmed as a Liverpool player late on Wednesday afternoon.

A Liverpool club statement read as follows: "Liverpool Football Club can confirm they have reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of Virgil van Dijk.

"The Reds have agreed a deal with the south coast club, and the player himself, that will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens on January 1, 2018.

"The Netherlands international will be assigned squad number four, upon his arrival at Liverpool."

Jamie Carragher and Neville discuss £75m fee on Twitter

Now a pundit on Sky Sports, Carragher's opinion is widely respected by fans of all Premier League clubs.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville tweeted his fellow pundit, asking whether he thought the record-breaking £75m transfer was "good value".

Carragher's savage response

Signed for £35m from Benfica in the summer, Victor Lindelof has struggled to settle in the Manchester United backline.

The Swedish defender has started only five Premier League games and Carragher clearly isn't too impressed.

Neville evidently did not appreciate Carragher's response.

Van Dijk will begin attempting to prove his tag as 'the world's most expensive defender' when Klopp's side face Everton in the FA Cup 3rd round next weekend.

He has started 11 Premier League games so far this season and is expected to replace Dejan Lovren in the first XI.
