Southampton's highly rated defender Virgil van Dijk was announced as Liverpool's latest signing on Wednesday evening.

The 26-year-old Dutchman joined Jurgen Klopp's side in a £75m deal after failing to secure his dream move this summer.

Southampton received a number of bids from Liverpool for Van Dijk in the summer transfer window but refused to sell, despite the player's remonstrations.

“Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player,” Van Dijk wrote on Instagram, alongside a photo of him with a Liverpool shirt.

“Today is a proud day for me and my family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football.

“I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.”

Outrage at Fonte on Twitter

Van Dijk's former Southampton teammate Jose Fonte caused a major stir on social media with his comment on the Dutchman's Instagram post.

The 34-year-old West Ham defender played alongside Van Dijk in the heart of the Saints defence and congratulated his former teammate on his big-money move.

However, his accompanying comment - in which he tagged Ryan Bertrand - left Southampton fans fuming.

Fonte attempts to clear up his comment

The Portuguese international shared an Instagram story in which he attempted to explain his controversial comment.

Van Dijk became the sixth player to move from Southampton to Liverpool since 2014.

The former Celtic man joins Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane to make the switch.

Bertrand, 28, has earned a reputation as one of England's finest left-backs since joining the Saints on a permanent deal from Chelsea in 2015.

Manchester City v Southampton - Premier League

He has won 19 caps for England but will struggle to make the World Cup squad if Southampton are unable to turn their fortunes around.

Mauricio Pellegrino's side currently lie 14th in the Premier League table.
