Earlier this week, it seemed as though Virgil van Dijk would have plenty of clubs to choose from for his next destination.
Ahead of the January transfer window, the likes of Manchester City, Barcelona and Arsenal all registered an interest in the Dutchman but were beaten to the punch by Liverpool.
In truth, it seemed the defender always had his heart set on a move to Merseyside. That was the case in the summer anyway, before Liverpool were reported to the Premier League for their alleged illegal approach.
But before they were embroiled in a bidding war with top European clubs, Liverpool splashed the cash on a player they hope can fix their leaky defence.
While the fee of £75 million is being questioned, many are surprised that Van Dijk chose Liverpool with the likes of Pep Guardiola’s City sniffing around.
The opportunity to join a side that has a chance to win four trophies this season - whilst potentially going unbeaten in the league - must have been very tempting.
But former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has revealed the one reason Van Dijk picked Jurgen Klopp’s side over City.
“Well the attraction would be him going as the No1 centre-back,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“If you go to Man City - there was talk they would go in for him. I thought City could go for him and replace Vincent Kompany with him.
“But they still have good defenders, such as Stones. Maybe there was more fight for his place there.
"He should be the first name on the team sheet for Klopp.”
Liverpool currently sit in fourth place just one point ahead of Spurs and four points ahead of Arsenal - although the Gunners do have a game in hand.
And Carragher believes Van Dijk can make all the difference when it comes to the fight for the top-four.
“It is more likely they will qualify for the Champions League,” the Sky Sports pundit added.
“Van Dijk looks like he needs to step up - he get fitter and lose a few pounds.”
