While everyone is talking about Liverpool’s new defender, one current player is doing his best to make sure he’ll be playing alongside Virgil van Dijk in years to come.

That man is Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 19-year-old has benefitted from Nathaniel Clyne being sidelined for the whole campaign and is currently competing with Joe Gomez at right-back.

Alexander-Arnold was given another chance to shine against Swansea on Boxing Day and grasped it with both hands. Not only did he help Jurgen Klopp’s side keep a clean sheet, he also scored a screamer at the Kop End - his first Premier League goal.

And Liverpool fans have spotted another aspect of his game from the 5-0 victory.

In the second-half, the youngster hit a stunning cross-field pass into the path of Roberto Firmino who won a free-kick in a very dangerous position.

It was Steven Gerrard-esque.

Take a look:

And Liverpool supporters are absolutely loving it. Check out the reaction:

But did he mean it?

Some people reckon he was aiming straight for Firmino, rather than trying to play it in behind the defender. Either way, it looked pretty special.

While he appears to be extremely mature on the pitch, Alexander-Arnold is also keeping his feet very firmly on the ground despite his rapid rise.

"Obviously I am really proud. It started well in January with the Man United game and I’ve pushed on really well since then," the defender said.

“To be doing what I’m doing now is a dream come true. I don’t think anyone pictured me doing what I have just done, to be fair.

“It all came from the manager’s trust and every time I get that chance I try to repay him on the pitch.

“But the aim as a team is just to win silverware. For the fans and everyone associated with the club they want to see silver back at Anfield and that is a really big target for us all.”
