Wednesday evening was pretty chaotic in the world of English football, as Liverpool announced they had agreed a stunning £75m fee with Southampton for central defender Virgil van Dijk.It is a deal which shatters the previous world-record fee for a defender, which was the £52m paid by Manchester City for Monaco's Benjamin Mendy. In the hours after the deal was announced, Van Dijk took to social media holding a Liverpool shirt in front of his Christmas tree at home, along with a very touching message.

VVD'S MESSAGE

However, one man took it upon himself to cause quite a stir on the post, with Jose Fonte adding a very unnecessary comment.

The West Ham defender - formerly of Southampton - wrote: "Pleased for you!!!Good luck brother!!!Another one @iamryanbertrand."

Now, on first glance, it looks as if the Portuguese international defender is hinting that Ryan Bertrand will be the next player to ditch St. Mary's for one of the Premier League's big boys.

Safe to say, the Twitter reaction to his comment was not one of understanding.

So, why did he do it? Well, Fonte has now explained why, but his reasoning certainly doesn't condone his actions.

FONTE EXPLAINS HIS ACTIONS

On his Instagram story, he wrote: "No disrespect towards Saints whatsoever on comment made on VVD picture.

"Only saying that another player (6th) moves to Liverpool, which was something Bertrand and myself used to joke about! Apologies if anyone got upset."

Now, while it may have been conducted in a light-hearted manner, a player of his experience in the game should no better when it comes to social media.

What doesn't help is that Bertrand has been regularly linked with a move away from Southampton in recent windows.

Liverpool have been one of the interested parties, while Chelsea and Manchester City have all been keen on the England international.

With the World Cup on the horizon, Bertrand may be best served ditching the south coast to strengthen his claim for the starting berth in Gareth Southgate's starting XI.

Danny Rose isn't exactly at the peak of his powers, so there is certainly an opportunity. Just stay out of it Jose.
