It’s been a long time coming but Liverpool have finally got Virgil van Dijk.

They chased and chased him in the summer only to be reported to the Premier League for their illegal approach. Many Liverpool fans were left scratching their heads wondering why Jurgen Klopp didn’t sign an alternative but it seems the German was willing to wait until January for the Dutchman.

It may have cost him £75 million but Klopp is delighted to finally get his man.

"Quality. That's why we got him, that's why we were interested in him,” the Liverpool boss told Sky Sports.

In the summer, reports suggested that Van Dijk had his heart set on a move to Liverpool and the Merseysiders ensured that no other clubs had the chance to change that by making an early move.

But when Van Dijk does walk out at Anfield, it won’t be the first time the 26-year-old has played there this season.

That’s because he faced Liverpool with Southampton last month during a 3-0 defeat.

Van Dijk wasn’t particularly impressive that day and, despite the defeat, it seems that match persuaded him to sign for Liverpool one day.

That’s because, according to The Times, he had a quiet word with a teammate as he walked off the pitch.

“Why wouldn’t you want to play here?” he reportedly said.

It seems Van Dijk’s mind was made up after that match.

It’s something that is becoming a bit of a trend. At the start of the season, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain faced Liverpool at Anfield as the north London club were thrashed 4-0.

While Oxlade-Chamberlain was pretty awful that day, he signed for the Reds just a few days later.

It seems as though getting thrashed at Anfield by Liverpool persuades you to join them.

Liverpool fans will be wondering when Lionel Messi and Barcelona are coming to town…
