Some Manchester United fans were a little disappointed when Timothy Fosu-Mensah was loaned to Crystal Palace in August. They felt he was good enough to play for the Red Devils this season. However, Antonio Valencia had enjoyed a magnificent season at right-back last term - he even picked up the Manchester United Players’ Player of the Year award at the end of the campaign - so most supporters could understand Jose Mourinho’s decision and respected it.Valencia, however, hasn’t appeared for United since suffering an injury in the 2-1 away win over West Brom earlier this month.Matteo Darmian, Victor Lindelof and Ashley Young have all played at right-back since then, but would Fosu-Mensah have been a better option than those three?

The moment v City Fosu-Mensah impressed Man Utd fans

After watching the 19-year-old produce a Man of the Match performance for Palace in their 0-0 draw against Manchester City today, that argument could certainly be made.

The Netherlands international was outstanding throughout the 90 minutes and his performance was typified by this brilliant passage of play midway through the second half.

Within the space of 10 seconds, Fosu-Mensah showcased his impressive technique, touch, his tenacity, and his range of passing.

United fans react on Twitter

Now, it seems, United fans on Twitter are all convinced that Fosu-Mensah should be their next right-back after Valencia…

Why Fosu-Mensah could return to United in January

It was revealed in the Daily Mail on Saturday that Man Utd will receive a £1 million ‘penalty payment’ from Crystal Palace if they decide to return Fosu-Mensah to Old Trafford early in order to free up space for another Premier League loan.

Fosu-Mensah is one of two season-long loanees at Selhurst Park right now, along with Chelsea’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

However, after his inspired performance today, it seems fanciful that Roy Hodgson will agree to hand the teenager back to United in January.
