When Arsenal secured the signing of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2016, the Gunners’ faithful were optimistic that the classy Switzerland international would bring some much-needed strength, stability and leadership to their midfield.Arsene Wenger convinced Arsenal to splash out £30 million on Xhaka, which seemed a reasonable fee for a 23-year-old with the potential to become one of the Premier League’s standout midfielders. However, it’s probably fair to say that Xhaka has flattered to deceive since arriving at the Emirates Stadium.Arsenal fans would admit that they would have expected a little more from the Basel-born star, who turned 25 in September.Xhaka made his 67th appearance for the Gunners against West Brom at the Hawthorns this afternoon - and Gary Neville produced one of the highlights of an otherwise drab match with his commentary about the Swiss midfielder during the first half.

Gary Neville wasn't impressed with Xhaka stat

Martin Tyler, Sky Sports’ lead commentator, pointed out that before this weekend’s round of Premier League matches, Xhaka had registered more touches in England’s top division so far this season than any other player.

“Xhaka?” Neville responded, sounding puzzled. “If you’d said tackles or mistimed tackles, I would have said yeah!”

When Tyler then started counting Xhaka’s passing, Neville added: “Oh, you’re counting little dribbles as a touch? Oh! That’s rubbish!”

“He should be doing it in one - he’s doing it in four!”

Twitter loved Neville's comment

As you can imagine, Sky Sports viewers loved Neville's commentary and expressed their views on Twitter.

Surprisingly, some Arsenal fans were also in agreement with Neville’s point about Xhaka taking too many touches when in possession…

Arsenal's top-four hopes dented

Arsenal were on course to boost their hopes of securing a top-four finish thanks to Alexis Sanchez's dramatic late free-kick. However, referee Mike Dean awarded a controversial penalty shortly afterwards and Jay Rodriguez duly levelled from the spot.

The Gunners still temporarily climb above Tottenham into fifth place thanks to their point. Mauricio Pochettino’s side, however, have a game in hand over their fierce local rivals.
