Manchester United were keen to start 2018 with a win, but they had the difficult task of travelling to Goodison Park to face Sam Allardyce's Everton.

With a mini-injury crisis on his hands, Jose Mourinho lined up with Anthony Martial up front, while summer signing Victor Lindelof was forced to fill in at right-back.

The Man Utd manager also recalled Ander Herrera to his starting XI and paired him with Nemanja Matic, in a move designed to give Paul Pogba more freedom to express himself.

United controlled the Toffees for much of the 2-0 win, but there was one moment from the opening period that their star man won't want to see again.

Pogba searching for form

Pogba is widely regarded as one of United's true top-class players, and while his talent is undeniable, his influence on games has been the subject of recent debate.

The 24-year-old often gets criticised for not making the difference, and Paul Scholes called for "the Pogba we saw at Juventus" after the 0-0 draw against Southampton.

Mourinho deployed Pogba on the left of a central midfield three at Everton, a position in which he thrived for Juve, and that's where he was when he produced a rather embarrassing moment.

Pogba's embarrassing moment

The France international was being closed down by Mason Holgate and needed to find a way to get past the 21-year-old defender.

With Juan Mata on the overlap, Pogba instead opted for a piece of trickery, however it's safe to say that his attempted skill did not go the way he would've planned it.

As you can see in the videos below, his efforts to beat Holgate resulted in him tripping over the ball, falling over and losing possession - much to the delight of the home crowd.

Fans react on Twitter

Since Pogba returned to United in 2016 for a whopping £89.3 million fee, every little thing he does during matches seems to be scrutinised that little bit more.

With that said, it didn't take long for football fans to take to Twitter to comment on the Frenchman's moment of misfortune at Goodison.

Take a look at the best reaction:

With top scorer Romelu Lukaku injured and Zlatan Ibrahimovic out for a month, Man Utd will definitely need Pogba at his brilliant best over the coming weeks.

Besides his showboating fail, Pogba played well against Everton, and provided the assist for Anthony Martial's all-important opener as well as Lingard's goal.
