It wasn't to be for Phil 'The Power' Taylor last night.

His fairytale ending was denied by relatively unknown Rob Cross, who this time last year was just an amateur trying to get his foot in the door.

Comparing the two careers would be like comparing night and day.

Taylor has won it all, and more than likely won it more than once, whilst taking home mass amounts of money.

As for Cross, he hadn't won anything, and was an electrician up until recently.

Just goes to show how much difference a year can make.

After booking his final spot, most punters would have back Taylor to complete the job and see out the fairytale ending, but it just wasn't to be.

The retiring darts legend lost the final 7-2 and was convincingly swept aside by the guy who also beat Michael van Gerwen, last year's champion, to get to the final in the first place.

Despite it not being the night he would have wanted, and even though some of his mid-match antics were not truly appreciated, Taylor showed some class and dignity in the end.

After the night was over, and all the fans had gone home, Taylor took to his official Twitter account to post a simple, but classy message to darts fans around the world.

'Thank You.'

That's all that was needed to be said for Taylor. Two words, but words that carry a whole lot of meaning.

Since posting it in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Taylor's tweet has been liked over 20,000 times, and has been retweeted over 3,500 times.

Darts fans acknowledging that their 'GOAT' is finally departing the sport.

As one man leaves, and a new man arrives, it's definitely a new era in the world of darts.

Thank You, Phil!
