After the media circus surrounding the £75m capture of Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool fans have switched their focus to Schalke's Leon Goretzka.

The Reds are known to be seeking a deal for the highly-rated youngster, with his current deal with the Bundesliga club expiring on July 1.

At one point, it appeared as if Jurgen Klopp's side were the favourites to acquire his coveted signature but then, it seemed as if Bayern Munich had swooped in ahead of them.

The Bundesliga leaders are known for snapping up the division's finest at a minimal price, sorting deals for Robert Lewandowski, Sebastian Rudy and Niklas Sule in recent years from their domestic rivals.

However, Liverpool may have been handed a huge boost, with Schalke's chief dropping a potential bombshell about the reports surrounding Bayern and Goretzka.

The club's sporting director, Christian Heidel, said: “Leon has not informed us that he has decided to change the air, and I trust Leon and his representative, with whom I had contact yesterday.”

So, Klopp's aim to sign one of his country's finest prospects may not be dead in the water just yet.

Goretzka's agent, Jorg Neubauer, also echoed Heidel's words, saying: “When the decision has been made, Leon and I will inform Schalke first of all."

It seems as if reports from Germany claiming Bayern's transfer success have been very, very premature.

Throughout the time Liverpool have been linked with him, Goretzka has been earmarked as the ideal man to replace want away Emre Can in Klopp's squad.

Can has refused to sign a contract extension with the club after the two parties could not agree on a release clause and now, it seems Juventus will get him on a free in the summer.

Naby Keita will arrive from RB Leipzig at Anfield as well, but getting Goretzka for nothing would be yet another statement of intent.
