The January transfer window is only a matter of days old but already, Liverpool have made some significant headlines.

Jurgen Klopp's side completed one of the most sensational deals in football history a short while before the window officially opened, completing the signing of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for £75m.

The world record fee for a defender may only be the start of their business, with Schalke's Leon Goretzka also being pursued by the club.

Another name that keeps cropping up is Naby Keita.

The Guinean midfielder was signed by Liverpool in the summer from RB Leipzig, costing a cool £48m.

However, it was agreed that Keita would not leave the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2018, with the club seeking a positive run in their first year of European competition. Although, that took a hit with the club failing to make the Champions League knockout stages.

Predictably, there have been many rumblings of Keita asking Leipzig to let him join Liverpool in January, with some also questioning his commitment to the club.

But, Leipzig's CEO has finally responded to these claims, clearing up any potentially loose details about their star midfielder.

"Neither Naby nor his agent have made the request to leave the club in the winter," Oliver Mintzlaff told Bild. "There are contracts, and they say that he will be a Liverpool employee from July 1 onwards."

The Leipzig chief also stated that he has no doubts over Keita's attitude, with the club on the hunt to seal Champions League qualification for the second consecutive season.

"It's not Naby's disposition [to save himself]. Our pros have character and are ambitious," Mintzlaff said. "I am not worried. In 2018, I expect everyone to step up with maximum mentality, force and character. That's what makes us strong, and that's what we need for a successful Ruckrunde.

"We want to achieve a lot, want to return to Europe and would love to again qualify for Champions League."

So, Liverpool will not be receiving a nice little midfield boost this winter but come the start of next season, their squad has the potential to look like one of the finest in Europe.
