Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan has moved to ease his selection crisis by signing Birmingham winger James O'Shea on a month's loan.

A virus has swept through the club this week and has laid low Gary O'Neil, Julio Arca and Stephen McManus, with several others being told to stay away from the club, so Strachan has brought the 21-year-old to the Riverside on a four-week deal.

Blues boss Alex McLeish said of the deal: "It's good for Jay to go out and get some experience.

"Hopefully he'll feature in Gordon's team. I know Gordon has some good quality in there so it will be big competition for Jay but he's another one who needs league experience."
