Given that Arsenal are currently sixth in the Premier League and 24 points behind leaders Manchester City, some new arrivals in January might be needed. In fact, they're definitely needed. Arsene Wenger's side have struggled this season and it's become very clear where improvements need to be made.Defensively the Gunners have been pretty woeful at times, conceding 26 goals in 21 games, and in the middle of the park they often get over run.Arsenal also need greater quality going forward, because beyond the favoured trio of Alexandre Lacazette, Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, they have Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi to call upon.Walcott and Iwobi have been a constant source of frustration for Arsenal fans, so the only other decent back-up is Olivier Giroud - but he's currently out injured.Change is needed and Wenger claims he will dip his toes into the January transfer window if an "exceptional" player becomes available."It is difficult to say," said Wenger ahead of Wednesday night's game against Chelsea. "We are out there to do some things, but when is hard to say, it is not dependent on us."We are open in any position for an exceptional player, it depends on injuries as well, and if we manage to extend contracts of players whose deals end in June."Likewise, Arsenal fans are desperate for Wenger to sign "exceptional" players, yet the Frenchman's first signing of January could end up being anything but that.According to Sky Sports (see below), Arsenal are in "advanced talks" to sign 20-year-old centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos, from Greece.

I know what you're thinking: who on earth is that?

Mavropanos is a young and highly-rated defender currently playing for PAS Giannina in the Superleague Greece.

Wenger is hoping to sign the youngster in a permanent deal, but as you can probably guess, Arsenal fans are not happy with the piece of business their manager is looking to complete.

Here's how they've reacted to the rumours of signing young Mavropanos.

TWITTER REACTS

It's easy to see why Arsenal fans aren't happy, especially when they were recently being linked with Chelsea's David Luiz - a top-class defender.

With Calum Chambers and Rob Holding already at the club, Wenger doesn't need to sign another highly-rated youngster.

Instead, he should be focusing on improving his defence with a reliable and proven centre-back - which, let's face it, was never going to happen.
