Mercedes Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas has launched a competition so fans can design a new helmet design for him to be used throughout the majority of the 2018 season.
Bottas and Mercedes are following in the footsteps of Lewis Hamilton last year, who launched a competition for fans to design his helmet for the 2017 season, although he used it on and off to his own design.
Bottas has used the same design since he entered F1 in 2013, with slight alterations year on year, but fundamentally, his helmet design has stayed the same and thus has been recognisable for fans watching on TV and at the tracks themselves.
The winner of the competition will see their design used by Bottas for the 'majority' of the races in 2018, and they will also receive a signed replica of the helmet from Bottas himself, making it a particularly memorable and special prize for the lucky winner.
Hamilton and Bottas aren't the only ones to have a competition for their helmet design either.
Jenson Button held a vote on Twitter for fans to pick his 2016 design, the vote going to his very recognisable union flag style livery, whilst several charity competitions have been run over the years and seen drivers wear special helmets for one off events.
Drivers are only permitted one helmet design change a year in order to make it easier for fans to recognise them in the car, so the days of Sebastian Vettel changing design after virtually every race at Red Bull are long gone, although existing designs can be extensively modified as Vettel does at Ferrari.
Bottas ended his first year with Mercedes third in the standings, after taking four pole positions and three victories and being a championship challenger at the halfway point of the year.
A poor run of form following Hungary dropped him out of contention, but an emphatic win in Abu Dhabi and two poles in a row at the end of the year have set him up nicely for a great 2018 campaign.
