Why The Undertaker vs. Sting will never happen

In the midst of the heyday of the Monday Night Wars, two of the most iconic figures in the professional wrestling world were The Undertaker from WWE and Sting from WCW.

The Undertaker's dark persona and mystical being captivated the WWE Universe since the character's inception, not to mention that he is one of the most respected competitors in the WWE's locker room of all time.

Over in WCW the Sting character had a ton of similarities and was just as much as a mysterious entity that The Undertaker was. Once WWE bought out WCW it seemed like there was a small possibility a match between Sting and The Undertaker could take place - but he opted not to sign with WWE.

Finally in 2012 Sting made his WWE debut after spending over a decade with IMPACT Wrestling. He began a feud with Triple H that built up to a WrestleMania match, and also had a match with Seth Rollins as well.

Unfortunately during his match with "The Architect" he suffered a legitimate neck injury that forced him to retire from in-ring competition. When a potential match against The Undertaker seemed as possible as ever now that Sting was with WWE, his injury all but closed the door on that possibility.

Wrestling Observer Newsletter's Dave Meltzer was asked on Twitter about the status of the dream match between Undertaker and Sting. Here's what he had to say:

"The impression we have is that Sting probably can't get cleared to wrestle. He's already retired. I know that if he could wrestle,he would want that match."

Despite the injury, Sting would still love to face "The Deadman" at WrestleMania if possible. He said this at a recent Q&A session at the Wales Comic Con:

"The only reason I held off on the surgery is because I had guys like Stone Cold saying don't do it. I don't have any side effects?

"I can still work out and it doesn't bother me, I don't get a sore neck from sleeping or anything so why would I get surgery? If you don't need it, don't do it."

What are your thoughts on Meltzer's explanation as to why WWE fans will never see a dream match between The Undertaker and Sting? Is this one of the top dream matches you'd like to see as a professional wrestling fan? And if the match were to take place, who would you be rooting for? Have YOUR say in the comments section below, and the fourth episode of GiveMeSport’s WWE podcast is here!
