Liverpool fans are coming to terms with the fact that Philippe Coutinho is no longer at the club. The Brazilian has become the second most expensive player in history, moving to Barcelona for £142 million. But the Reds don’t have time to dwell on Coutinho’s departure. They’re entering a crucial stage of their campaign as they harbour hopes of a top-four finish, progression in the Champions League - where they face Porto in the last-16 - and having progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup.There’s no doubt Liverpool have just lost a world-class player but fans are hoping they now have plenty of money to spend on a replacement - preferably in this transfer window.A replacement seemingly hasn’t been lined up just yet - although they have been linked with both Thomas Lemar and Riyad Mahrez.Supporters will just be hoping Coutinho’s transfer fee doesn’t go to waste. After all, Liverpool have thrown away plenty of money in the past.Stewart Downing was brought for £18.5 million, Alberto Aquilani was signed for £17 million and a crazy £35 million was splashed on Andy Carroll.Liverpool fans will be praying they don’t make a similar mistake this time around. And that’s certainly what Jamie Carragher is hoping for.He reacted to Coutinho’s move to Barcelona on Twitter and insisted that they money must now be invested wisely.“Disappointed Coutinho has gone, never thought he’d turn into the players he’s become when I first played with him, but he’s been a great @LFC player these last few years. 142 million though! Just need to use the money better than we did when Suarez left!!,” he wrote.

Having just spent £75 million on Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita set to arrive in the summer for a deal in excess of £50 million, Liverpool have certainly spent plenty of money of late.

However, there’s no doubt another big signing is needed as they attempt to somehow replace the void left behind by Coutinho.
