In his debut season in the NBA, Utah Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell is developing into one of the most exciting young players and is already a star in the making. He has taken everybody by surprise with how quickly he's adapted to the league and the level he's playing at.Mitchell has helped fill the void left by Gordon Hayward and is the leading scorer for the Jazz averaging 18.5 points per game in his first campaign. As well as being a skilled scorer, the 21-year-old has demonstrated incredible athleticism and has racked up a number of highlight plays throughout the course of the campaign so far.In an encounter with the Miami Heat on Sunday, the shooting guard added to his collection with another jaw-dropping play.Midway through the third quarter, veteran Thabo Sefolosha led a fastbreak for Utah and threw a perfect alley-oop pass to a streaking Mitchell. The youngster soared through the air and threw down a vicious one-handed dunk.

This was just the latest in a long line of impressive dunks from the Jazz star already this year and it's another reason why many are calling for him to take part in the Slam Dunk Contest next month.

Mitchell led all scorers on the night with 27 points on 12-of-25 shooting but he ended up on the losing side as a Josh Richardson layup with 5.1 seconds remaining won the game for the Heat.

The Louisville product did have a chance to seal the victory for Utah but he missed the potential game-winning shot at the buzzer.

Following the loss, he lamented his bad decision-making down the stretch as he was double-teamed and chose to hoist up a heavily contested shot instead of passing to an open teammate.

“They double-teamed me, which means Hoodie (Rodney Hood) was open and I should’ve made the right read instead of shooting that,” Mitchell said, per Kyle Goon of the Salt Lake Tribune.

The Salt Lake City franchise has now lost three straight games and won just three out of their last 16 contests. They next face a tough encounter with the Washington Wizards as they continue their four-game road trip.

Despite a promising run in November, they are now in a real slump and are 16-24 in the Western Conference.

They have fallen adrift of the teams in playoff contention and must find a winning run from somewhere to stay within touching distance.

Mitchell has been their only spark for much of the year but it's clear they'll need production from elsewhere if they are to remain competitive.
