Damian Lillard is having another impressive season with the Portland Trail Blazers but continues to fly slightly under the radar.

The 27-year-old's play is often overlooked and doesn't get the recognition he deserves for the terrific numbers he puts up on a nightly basis.

This season he's averaging 24.9 points, 6.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game and has led the Blazers to a winning record at 21-18.

When discussing the top point guards in the NBA, Lillard's name is very rarely mentioned despite his stats putting him up there with the very best.

The Oakland native has also been snubbed from the All-Star game on multiple occasions in recent years and has been unable to rub shoulders with the elite guards in the league.

His omission over the last two seasons has been a major talking point among NBA fans and it'll be interesting to see if he's selected to participate in Los Angeles next month.

One man who is backing him to be there is San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who believes Lillard is worthy of a spot.

“He’s a hell of a player, one of the best guards in the league," Popovich told Portland Tribute Sports’ Kerry Eggers. "(Making All-Star team) is just very difficult to do. There are a lot of good players. He’s certainly more than deserving to be talked about in that regard.”

After winning Rookie of the Year in 2013, Dame became an All-Star in back-to-back campaigns. But he didn't feature in the showpiece event in 2016 or 2017 and could potentially miss out again this time around.

This year's participants will be confirmed over the coming weeks and whether Lillard makes it or not will once again be a talking point.

Up to six guards could be chosen and the Portland star will face stiff competition with the Western Conference boasting a host of talented players at that position.

One thing that could go against him, however, is the fact that he's missed a number of games recently and is currently out with a calf strain.

The All-NBA man returned to the Trail Blazers lineup on Friday after recovering from a hamstring injury but has been sidelined with a separate issue almost immediately.

He will be challenging the likes of Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Chris Paul and Klay Thompson which will make things difficult for him.

However, Lillard has still played the majority of his team's games, and has played them well. And he will hope an endorsement from the best coach in the league will go some way to securing a place on the All-Star team in L.A.
