The New Orleans Saints rolled back the years on Sunday as they beat the Carolina Panthers 31-26.

That win in the wildcard round has set up a divisional round game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Saints 38-year-old quarterback Drew Brees proved he's still one of the best around after passing for 376 yards and two touchdowns at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. But his opposite number, Cam Newton, didn't enjoy the match as much as he'd hoped, even though they went into the game as slight favourites.

The Panthers quarterback did throw two touchdowns, but he was sacked four times in Sunday's loss. He also took a huge hit from Saints' defensive tackle David Onyemata, which forced him off the field before he collapsed to his knees on the sideline.

And the battering of Newton didn't stop there. Instead, New Orleans defensive end Cameron Jordan decided to have some fun at the losing quarterback's expense post-game.

Jordan posted a picture on his Instagram story of himself mailing Newton a bottle of wine. Why? Because the Saints beat the Panthers three times this year.

The gift is a reference to Newton's comments earlier this season when he said he'd 'send Jordan some sauce' after the defensive end made fun of one of his outfits.

"You beat the Carolina Panthers three times in a year, I’m gonna have to send this guy a wine bottle," Jordan said, per ESPN.

"I appreciate him. So I’m gonna send him some sauce.”

The Saints star was unsurprisingly in a good mood following Sunday's game. He played a key role in his team's victory, sacking Newton and forcing the game-deciding intentional grounding call.

He'll be hoping for a similar performance next weekend against the Vikings, with a spot in the NFC Conference Championship up for grabs.

Minnesota go straight into the divisional game after winning the NFC North with a record of 13-3 and clinching a first-round bye.

But with the Saints appearing to roll back the years, putting in performances reminiscent of their 2010 Superbowl win, Sunday's clash could go either way.

Brees, who turns 39 next week, will be hoping to lead his team to a better result than they managed in week 1.

The Saints started their season with a disappointing 29-19 loss at U.S. Bank Stadium and as they've had to play an extra game to reach this round, Sunday will be a very tough task for the visitors.
