Amir Khan has moved a significant step closer to making his long-awaited return to the ring after agreeing promotional terms with Matchroom and Eddie Hearn.

The 31-year-old revealed via Twitter on Tuesday that he would be making a “major announcement” regarding his future at a press conference on Wednesday.

But by Tuesday evening it had emerged that Khan had secured a deal with Hearn and Matchroom, rejecting an offer from ITV in the process.

Boxing fans expressed their surprise on social media after the news leaked but are looking forward to the prospect of watching Khan resume his career.

The Bolton-born fighter, who recently appeared on the reality TV show ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’, hasn’t fought since losing to Canelo Alvarez back in May 2016.

However, he is now expected to have three fights this year, one of which could be against his long-term rival Kell Brook.

News of Khan’s partnership with Hearn has left boxing fans scratching their heads because the two men have never appeared to see eye-to-eye.

What Khan said about Hearn last August

Indeed, as the Daily Mail point out, Khan told reporters that he didn’t like Hearn while discussing the promoter in August from Las Vegas during the build-up to the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor fight.

“The only way I would take that Brook fight is if he left Eddie Hearn. I just don't like Eddie Hearn,” Khan stated.

“He's very disrespectful and he's never come clear with me. If he really wanted the fight between me and Kell Brook he should not be speaking to me, he should be speaking to (my adviser) Al Haymon. I always said that to him.

“That's one of the reasons why I keep away from Eddie Hearn and his shows, I just don't want to be in that drama.”

Awkward

Hmm. Whatever you say, Amir.

His comments look pretty awkward now, don’t they?

It seems the two men have let bygones be bygones and reached the conclusion that it’s in both of their interests to work together.
