If you were to ask 100 neutral football fans who the best goalkeeper in the world is at the moment - and apologies if this sounds a bit too Family Fortunes - then it’s pretty safe to assume which two names would appear top of the pile.

Following a string of remarkable performances, not just this season but over the past few years, David de Gea’s name would probably receive the most mentions followed by Manuel Neuer.

The likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Thibaut Courtois, Hugo Lloris, Jan Oblak and Keylor Navas would then all be competing for third spot.

However, there’s another world-class goalkeeper who, for some strange reason, has gone a little under the radar over the past 18 months.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen has arguably been the second best goalkeeper in Europe this season behind De Gea.

Ter Stegen doesn't always receive the credit he deserves

The Barcelona number one has been in magnificent form throughout the 2017-18 campaign, putting in some seriously impressive performances in both La Liga and the Champions League.

However, Ter Stegen has rarely received the headlines that his performances deserve.

With Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and now Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho at the Camp Nou, it’s not hard to understand why that’s the case.

Joe Hart nails his assessment of Ter Stegen

But one person who fully appreciates what Ter Stegen has been doing in recent months is the England and West Ham keeper Joe Hart.

The 30-year-old, speaking to The Times, nailed his assessment of Ter Stegen while talking about the goalkeepers he admires.

“He’s phenomenal,” Hart said of Ter Stegen. “He’s ridiculous with his feet, I’ve never seen anyone so calm with distribution.

“He’s got these massive hands, he’s very confident in all the saves.”

It’s quite amusing that Hart has picked out Ter Stegen for his distribution and failed to give a mention to Ederson, Pep Guardiola’s current No. 1 at Manchester City.

Nevertheless, the point still stands that Ter Stegen is a wonderful passer of the ball and is the perfect fit for Barça.
