When Barcelona went 2-0 down to Real Sociedad at the Anoeta, they must have been thinking: ‘here we go again.’

The Blaugrana have not won at the home of Sociedad in the league since 2007 and that didn’t look like changing on Sunday night after 34 minutes.

But not only did Ernesto Valverde’s side maintain their unbeaten campaign, they eventually ran out comfortable 4-2 winners - extending their lead over Real Madrid to a crazy 19 points.

In fairness, Barca were lucky to be going in at half-time 2-1 down.

Paulinho’s 39th-minute goal gave the Catalan club a way back into the game before the break - a goal they scarcely deserved.

But we saw a completely different Barca side in the second-half.

Luis Suarez’s incredible finish got them back on level terms before the Uruguayan finished cooly to give his team the lead with less than 20 minutes remaining.

But there was still time for Lionel Messi to get in on the act - and he did so with some style.

Real Sociedad v Barcelona - La Liga

With five minutes left on the clock, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner lined up a free-kick 35 yards out.

What happened next was simply stunning.

Take a look:

We’re not quite why goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli didn’t move but let’s just admire Messi’s brilliance.

That’s exactly what Gary Lineker did.

He took to Twitter after seeing Messi’s 23rd goal of the season to sing the praises of the superstar.

“Messi has just scored with a most ridiculous free-kick. He plays a game that mere mortals couldn’t even dream of playing,” Lineker wrote.

We’re not going to argue with that.
