CoCo Vandeweghe just had a rather stern conversation with a man about timing and a banana. The young American was left frustrated in her first-round match against the number 51 ranked Hungarian Timea Babos. Her temper was flared by chair umpire Fergus Murphy for a lack of empathy in relation to there being no court-side bananas for her at the change of ends.Oh the humanity.Venderweghe was annoyed the court had not left some bananas by her chair for her to eat in between ends, protesting to Murphy “it’s not my fault”.The umpire, unmoved, flatly tells her to get on with it and stop time wasting or causing a delay of game.Naturally, when the fruit does finally arrive, despite play already being called, Vanderweghe obtusely takes a very deliberate bite of one in front of the official.Murphy, unperturbed, calls the 26-year-old for a time violation, and her day wasn’t going to get any better.Despite being 4-2 up in the first set, she went on to lose to her Hungarian opponent in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. Despite getting to the semi-finals of the Australian Open last year, it’s a first-round exit in 2018, which will be regarded as a major disappointment.Seems like the banana disappointment put her off her game. There may have been a more mundane reason for her lacklustre display, though. She had this to say in her post-match press conference: “This is the first time I’ve been out of bed in four days, I’ve had the flu since Sunday. The doctor gave me some medication but it’s not working all that well, so here I am.”

First no bananas, and now she has the flu. How does she cope?

Vanderweghe’s defeat capped a difficult start for the American team to the first major of the year, who have gone 0-8 during the first round so far.

Tennis in the US must really be going downhill these days, they just can’t produce any world-class players.
