At one point in time the "Woken" or "Broken" gimmick was the hottest thing in professional wrestling, but it seems that the character's momentum has slowed down a bit since coming to WWE.

Matt Hardy made the "Broken Universe" famous on IMPACT Wrestling in addition to his travels across the world on the independent circuit, and built a huge following and fan base for the gimmick throughout his travels.

Hardy and his brother, Jeff, who used the moniker "Brother Nero" under the Broken gimmick, took over the independent scene's tag team division by capturing titles from various promotions across the globe.

When Hardy opted not to re-sign with IMPACT, however, a legal issue halted him from bringing the gimmick to WWE for several months.

Finally Hardy was able to obtain the character's legal rights and has been using it on Monday Night RAW during his feud with Bray Wyatt.

Fans have noticed that the character's evolution has stalled a bit since coming to WWE, but in a recent interview with IGN to promote WWE 2K18's new DLC, Hardy explained why that is with a brilliant point.

Hardy stated that the WWE Universe isn't as familiar with the "Broken Universe" like most hardcore fans, so we need to be patient when it comes to seeing the character continue to develop (quotes via Rajah):

"It's been great. Just tremendous. And I'm very excited for this undertaking. It's starting to take hold. I think the hardcore fans have to remember that patience is paramount.

"There's such a huge percentage of the WWE Universe and the WWE fanbase who aren't familiar with the story of the Woken-slash-Broken character so we have to educate them and get them up to speed and help them understand what's going on.

"And that's something the die hard fans are frustrated with. But things are going to get where they need to be and this is a process now that's playing out over TV.

"The biggest thing I'd say to people is just sit back and enjoy this truly truly fun and jubilant ride."
