Kevin Owens on what Vince McMahon told him before the headbutt

Back in September one of the biggest segments in recent SmackDown Live memory took place between Kevin Owens and Vince McMahon.

Prior to this episode Kevin Owens had been feuding with SmackDown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon. Owens felt that McMahon had held a personal vendetta against him after refereeing his United States Title match against AJ Styles at SummerSlam - which he lost.

This led to a few physical confrontations between Owens and Shane, in which McMahon viciously attacked Owens which led to "KO" threatening a lawsuit against McMahon and the entire WWE. As a result Vince McMahon showed up to SmackDown Live the following week to confront Owens.

McMahon granted Owens a match against his son at the then-upcoming Hell In A Cell pay-per-view (PPV), and it would serve as the event's featured bout inside the similarly named steel structure.

Owens then baited Vince into giving him amnesty for putting his hands on 'any' McMahon family member.

After Vince assured him there would be no punishment, Owens viciously headbutted Vince before hitting him with a super kick and frog splash.

Referees and Stephanie McMahon came out to check on Vince and the table was set for "KO" vs. Shane at Hell In A Cell.

Owens would go on to win the match thanks to a heel turn by Sami Zayn who helped his former best friend by pulling him off the announce table at the last second as Shane came down with an elbow drop from the top of the structure.

In a recent interview with Chris Jericho on his podcast, Talk Is Jericho, Owens revealed what McMahon was telling him as they were shaking hands during the segments when the microphones were lowered.

Owens said McMahon cursed at him several times, urging him not to hold back on the headbutt (quotes via IWNerd):

“And then he starts talking so much s**t. If you can read his lips, I was legitimately taken aback by it. So many swear words.

“People always ask me later, what was he saying when the mics were down? Was he telling you to make sure to get him good?….In a way, but not in those words…”
