The Australian Open is in full swing, and one of the surprises has been the young and talented Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine.

The 15-year-old made her Grand Slam debut by competing in the Open via a wildcard entry in the qualifying rounds.

She responded by winning all her qualifying matches, and then defeating Peng Shuai in the first round, becoming the youngest person to win a main draw match in Melbourne since Martina Hingis in 1996.

In the next round, she defeated another wildcard entry in Olivia Rogowska in straight sets.

With that win, she became the youngest person to reach the third round in over 20 years.

A simply remarkable achievement, for someone who was born after the millennium.

All in all, Kostyuk certainly seemed to be on a hot streak, but the rising star was up against her fellow countrywoman, fourth seed Elina Svitolina, in the round of 32.

Svitolina, who ranks among the best female tennis players in the world, definitely showed everyone why today, defeating Kostyuk after just two sets.

Kostyuk took it in her stride, however, congratulating her fellow Ukranian and wishing her luck with the tournament.

She took to social media after the match and posted a picture of the two hugging, with the caption: "Thank you @elisvitolina for a tennis lesson and for not charging me for it"

Kostyuk went on to say it was a privilege playing against Svitolina at Rod Laver Arena.

Now that she has the first major tournament experience under her belt, it will be interesting to see if she can find her way back in for next year.

She does still have a lot to learn, but to accomplish what she has at just 15 years of age, it's quite remarkable.

Certainly one to look out for in the future, if not the present.
