Not many football fans expected to see Marco Silva sacked as Watford manager on Sunday morning. The Hornets announced the news following yesterday’s 2-0 defeat at Leicester City, a result which continued their miserable form. They still sit 10th in the Premier League table but a run of one win in 11 league outings has clearly left the club concerned about their status. It’s once you read Watford’s statement that you begin to understand the decision more. By the sounds of it, Silva had no relationship with the board and Everton’s recent approach was a distraction.“The Club is convinced the appointment of Silva was the right one and had it not been for the unwarranted approach by a Premier League rival for his services we would have continued to prosper under his leadership,” the statement read.

Gary Neville has reacted on Twitter

Silva’s sacking means that eight out of 20 Premier League managers this season have lost their jobs and Gary Neville believes something needs to be done about it.

Taking to Twitter, the former Manchester United defender said a rule change is required to ensure fewer managers are sacked in their first year in charge at a club.

“The scary thing is that a large % of people now actually support these sackings as they’ve become accustomed to it…,” Neville wrote.

“How can you build a football team without getting 2-3 years. A rule change is required to moderate sackings of managers mid season in their first year at a club.”

Everyone would like to see managers being given more of an opportunity. It takes time to build a successful team and in Silva’s case, there were certainly signs at the beginning of the season that Watford were in for an exciting campaign.

Neville raises a good point and his tweet has sparked a debate among football fans. Check out the reaction below.
