What more can you say about Lionel Messi?

One fan summed the situation up quite perfectly on Sunday evening, following Barcelona’s magnificent 5-0 away win over Real Betis, by tweeting: “Years of watching Messi and he still surprises us, leaves us in awe. We should stop writing about him and trying to describe him, just enjoy him.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was on a totally different planet at the Estadio Benito Villamarín, netting a brace in the rout. But aside from two goals, it was his all-round performance which left all football fans astounded.

This was a true Messi masterclass; arguably his best performance of the season so far - and that’s saying something.

The Argentina international has been in scintillating form throughout the 2017-18 campaign to date, but there was something extra special about his display against Betis on Sunday night.

Valverde and Suarez hail Messi

"You have to enjoy him," Valverde said of Messi after the match, per FourFourTwo. "We have been able to live his era.

"I have suffered because of him and I know what that is like. Now I can enjoy it.

"It is an event to watch him every day. He is the best player there is and there ever will be."

Luis Suarez, meanwhile, was quoted by Marca after the match as saying: "The people who came to the stadium could enjoy it, they had the chance to see the best player in history.

"He plays each game with such detail. He's spectacular."

A video of Messi’s incredible individual highlights has emerged - and you can watch it here…

Just remarkable.

No wonder the Mirror handed him a perfect 10/10 rating, elaborating: "Scored two, set up one, and basically ran amok. Betis defenders will have nightmares for weeks about this game, with Messi leaving them all for dead on multiple occasions."

Messi is football.
