Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has been embroiled in a hilarious Twitter war with Liverpool supporters over the last few months.

It's been all about Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, who eventually joined the Reds in a £75m deal at the beginning of January.

"Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player," said Van Dijk upon joining.

"I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club."

The former Southampton captain handed in a transfer request over the summer amid interest from Jurgen Klopp's side.

However, the Saints refused to sell and threatened to report Liverpool to the Premier League over their illegal pursuit of Van Dijk.

The 26-year-old centre back was in the XI for Liverpool's surprise defeat away at Swansea City on Monday night - and played a part in the only goal.

The former Southampton midfielder is now a pundit on Sky Sports and quite enjoyed watching Liverpool concede the opening goal away at the Liberty Stadium.

Van Dijk won his header but failed to get any distance on his clearance, allowing Alfie Mawson to fire past Loris Karius in the Liverpool goal.

Knowing he was going to wind up Liverpool's supporters on social media, Le Tissier tweeted "Decent assist from van dijk there".

Liverpool fans did not appreciate Le Tissier's jibe

Liverpool lie fourth in the Premier League table, 25 points ahead of Southampton in 18th.

Van Dijk previously enjoyed a dream Liverpool debut, nodding in the winner against Everton in the FA Cup - his Premier League debut was a little more forgettable.

“Anfield is a very special stadium and it is my home right now as well,” said Van Dijk. “I am just looking forward to being on the pitch. It’s going to be nice, especially the evening games and the European nights.

“Obviously, I have played in the Champions League with Celtic and that was very special as well. Liverpool is up there as well with the atmosphere and the fans.

"Everything is perfect - the stadium, the training ground, the facilities and the people who work at the club, the people and the city, the fans. It is just the perfect place for me to be, and for my family to be as well.”
