Last weekend, with a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship game, the New England Patriots earned their spot in the Super Bowl this season against the Philadelphia Eagles at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 4.

However, most of the talk before the game last week was if the Patriots would be able to make it to the NFL's biggest game of the year without their star quarterback Tom Brady, who was questionable for the AFC title game after picking up a hand injury during practice in the week.

With a little bit a tape and a couple of stitches though, the five-time Super Bowl champion was able to play and he executed well to send New England to their tenth Super Bowl in franchise history, and their eighth with him as their quarterback.

Brady finished the game with 26-of-38 passing attempts completed for 290 yards and two touchdowns, helping the Patriots achieve a 24-20 come-from-behind victory at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough after being 20-10 down at one point in the fourth quarter.

During his weekly interview with WEEI, Brady finally revealed the details behind his hand injury after keeping it under wraps for the past week, stating he really wasn’t sure, at one point, if he was going to be able to play in the AFC title game.

The Patriots quarterback said: “It was pretty stressful. I was stressed out. You drive home and you have all these stitches in this place. You’re driving home and I saw my wife and she said, ‘What happened?!’ and I said, ‘I know, it was just an accident in practice.’ She said, ‘What is going to happen?’ I said, ‘I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes.’

“We ran into each other and my thumb just got bent back. It wasn’t his helmet or anything. Just kind of got bent back. That is why I felt it was a lot worse. The doctors went in and checked it out and we did things just to kind of check on everything and fortunately, there wasn’t any damage that normally comes associated with that. I think we were very lucky.”

Looking ahead to Super Bowl LII, Brady said he will get the stitches out this week and it won't be an issue for the game in two weeks time.

He said: “I think hopefully sometime this week and at that point, again, I was fortunate not to tear any ligaments or anything like that. There [were] no broken bones. That was obviously the best news I could ever hear based on what you think it could be and we found out that it wasn’t.

"After an unlucky injury, it turned out to be a lot of good luck that it wasn’t more serious than it was.”

Luckily for Brady and the Patriots, the hand injury didn't affect his play, as the current defending Super Bowl Champions are in the big game once more.
