You will have to go a long way to find a more controversial transfer that Alexis Sanchez's switch to Manchester United from Arsenal.

It seemed that the Chilean attacker was destined for Manchester City and a reunion with Pep Guardiola, but once they baulked at his financial demands, the Red Devils swooped in.

Jose Mourinho's side have offered him a contract worth around £350,000-a-week after tax, the most expensive deal in the history of the Premier League.

Arsenal fans weren't happy, despite getting Henrikh Mkhitaryan in return and his farewell message to the club really caused a stir.

"I remember today, a conversation I had with Henry, a historic Arsenal player, who changed club for the same reason and today is my turn," Sanchez wrote, making Gunners fans fairly unhappy with Thierry Henry.

The French legend responded on Twitter saying that he never once told Sanchez to leave the club.

HENRY'S TWEET

Interesting. So, what really was said?

Was Sanchez dropping a club legend in trouble or were his words lost in translation?

Well, United's new forward took to Twitter early on Wednesday morning to voice a different angle on the situation, one which should clear it up for good.

SANCHEZ RESPONDS

So, he didn't ask Sanchez to leave. Also, I think it's pretty clear that Henry loves the club.

Now, Sanchez can focus on playing for his new club and United legend Ryan Giggs is adamant his acquisition will galvanise the whole squad.

"Alexis Sanchez is similar to Robin van Persie in the sense that they're getting a ready-made superstar and you're seeing the contribution already with Anthony Martial upping his performances," he wrote for Sky Sports.

"That can happen when top players come in, those around them lift their levels, and there will be some difficult selection decisions for Jose Mourinho.

"However, Sanchez can also play on the right, as he did at Barcelona, so if Martial is flying then he may have to play in a different position, but those sort of decisions are positive for a manager to have to make.

"It is an extra bonus that he can play in the Champions League. To have somebody like that, who won't be fazed by playing in the big games, makes the squad look really strong."
