In just over a week's time the January transfer window will shut, giving Liverpool very little time to sign a worthy replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho joined Barcelona for £142 million earlier this month and while he wasn't missed against Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp has the money to bring in another top-class player.

Liverpool fans certainly hope the German has something up his sleeve, but over the weekend he insisted they are not currently active in the transfer window.

"If something jumps in my face maybe we would think about it, but we don't actively try to find new players that we don't know," said Klopp.

"I've said it before, we have to use the players that we have. That makes sense. We have really high-quality players, especially Adam Lallana.

"He is not the replacement for Philippe Coutinho, he is a completely different player but a fantastic player. He is back, that is good. Are we active? No."

Riyad Mahrez and Thomas Lemar have both been linked with moves to Anfield in recent times and according to Duncan Castles, Liverpool actually have an agreement in place with Lemar.

But there's a problem - and a pretty big one.

It was previously reported Liverpool and Monaco just needed to agree a fee, but Castles claims Klopp is completely refusing to pay Lemar's €100 million price tag.

Castles writes, per Yahoo! Sport:

"Liverpool have an agreement in place with Thomas Lemar to join the club having courted the France winger for much of last year, but have refused to meet AS Monaco's asking price of at least €100m."

Whereas Arsenal were prepared to pay €100 million for Lemar last summer, Liverpool believe Monaco are asking for too much and now negotiations appear to have stalled.

Lemar will only hope a fee can be agreed given his wishes to join Liverpool.
