Antonio Conte didn’t think he would need to bring on Ross Barkley in the first half of last night’s Carabao Cup match against Arsenal. But when Willian went down with a hamstring injury after half an hour, the Italian had no choice to hand Barkley his debut.Conte was seen shouting at the former Everton midfielder to hurry up as he prepared to come on and the Italian’s comments about Barkley suggest he remains unconvinced by the new recruit.Barkley was making his first appearance of the season and so it’s harsh to pass judgement just yet.The 24-year-old never really looked like he would make the difference for Chelsea and it’s clear that he needs more minutes under his belt. The Mirror, who graded Barkley’s performance as six out of 10, wrote about the midfielder: “Was given a welcome back on his debut with a late challenge from Jack Wilshere, and certainly looked a little rusty at first. Got into the game more as it went on, but looked way off match fitness.”Still, Conte asked a lot of him, deploying him on the left, right and centre of the attacking three.

A video of Barkley’s highlights has emerged and you can check it out below.

The video proves Barkley needs to regain his fitness

This was the point made by fans on Twitter. With more minutes, Barkley can get back to match fitness and learn Conte's system more.

It’s clear that Barkley has a long way to go before he will be a regular in Conte’s starting line-up and Jermaine Jenas believes he needs to show a lot more than he did against Arsenal.

“I was disappointed with Barkley but we've got to give him time,” Jenas said BBC Radio 5 live.

“He's going to have to work something out very quickly. He has to take responsibility. He needs to be more productive, score goals and make things happen and be the player that Chelsea have bought.”

Whether Conte is ready to give him the minutes he needs to build up his fitness remains to be seen.
