Rochdale missed the chance to win their first promotion since 1969 on Saturday afternoon as the Coca-Cola League Two leaders suffered a shock 5-0 defeat at struggling Torquay.

Goals from Scott Rendell and an Elliot Benyon brace had Torquay three up at the break before Nicky Wroe with a penalty and Mustapha Carayol completed the rout in the second half.

Defeat saw Rochdale's lead at the top cut to two points by Notts County, who won 1-0 at Northampton thanks to Ben Davies' 47th-minute goal. County also have a game in hand.

Dale are still 14 points clear of fourth-placed Aldershot, though.

Third-placed Bournemouth, Aldershot, Rotherham in fifth and sixth-spotted Chesterfield all failed to win.

Bournemouth went down 2-1 at Lincoln to see their cushion over the Shots cut to six points.

Davide Somma scored twice for the hosts either side of Brett Pitman's equaliser.

Aldershot could only manage a 1-1 draw at Port Vale, for whom Sean Rigg cancelled out Dean Morgan's opener.

Rotherham and Chesterfield are level on points with Aldershot.

The Millers went down 2-0 at Morecambe, Phil Jevons and Simon Hackney with two goals in the space of three minutes in the second half.
