There can be no doubting that Louis van Gaal made some questionable transfer decisions as Manchester United boss.Making Memphis Depay the club's number seven, allowing Radamel Falcao to lead the line and selling Angel di Maria for a huge loss weren't exactly masterstrokes. His courageous signing of Anthony Martial proved the only major coup in two years at Old Trafford.Perhaps Van Gaal's most bizarre decision of his United tenure came in January 2015, though, in what endures as one of the most random transfers in Premier League history. The Red Devils made an inexplicable move for Andy Kellett on Deadline Day, beating Plymouth Argyle to a left-back who was struggling to make the first team under Neil Lennon.Just to confirm, you did read that right.

Plymouth Argyle v Manchester United

Kellett was on the brink of dropping from the Championship to League Two having only made four league appearances at the Macron Stadium when arguably the world's biggest club snapped him up instead.

Lennon recounted the remarkable story at the time, explaining: "He thought he was going to Plymouth – I said, ‘sorry Andy, you’re not going to Plymouth, you’re going to Man Utd.

“He surprised to say the least. He rang his dad, who had to sit down for a while to take it all in."

You simply couldn't write it and, low and behold, Kellett completed his move to United. It was at this point that it emerged that the Englishman was in fact ranked as the single worst player in the Championship by statistical body Whoscored.com.

Out of 200 separate statistics and 24 teams worth of players, Kellett found himself at the bottom.

What happened next?

To say the 24-year-old's career adopted a downward trajectory from that moment on would be putting it mildly.

Making 10 appearances for United's under 21s outfit, Kellett had his one-year loan cut short and returned to parent club Bolton for whom he never played again.

A brief spell at Wigan Athletic looked to revive his career with the left-back accumulating 14 appearances and two goals across two seasons. Proceedings well and hit rock bottom when he decided to move in the summer of 2017, however.

He now finds himself at League Two Chesterfield, who sit just one point above the relegation zone.

Only Forest Green Rovers and Barnet have picked up fewer points this season with the Spireites having already suffered 16 defeats this season. Kellett has made 19 appearances in the league and scored once, but has dropped to the bench in recent fixtures.

Even if Kellett experiences the mother of all comebacks at Chesterfield, though, he remains light years away from his chance of glory at United.
