As the days pass in January, every football fan is eager to see if any big deals are pushed over the line before Wednesday's deadline.

In Premier League terms, a number of clubs are still heavily involved in the market, with Arsenal possibly looking to make at least two major signings.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the big-name striker wanted by the club, while West Brom's Jonny Evans is the sturdy force they need to fix their leaky defence.

The Northern Irishman was wanted by Manchester City, however, their impending signing of Athletic Bilbao's Aymeric Laporte means they're pretty much out of the race.

With Manchester United also not rumoured to be particularly interested in the 30-year-old, Arsenal essentially are the front runners for Evans.

According to The Sun, the Gunners tabled a £25m package for the defender earlier in the month, but West Brom were happy to keep him or attempt to squeeze more money out of City.

But now, they know Arsenal are the only ones in the race and do not want to run the risk of losing him for £3m next summer, which they could due to a clause in his contract if the club are relegated.

As such, the Baggies have told the Gunners to match their new £27m valuation of the player and then the deal will be completed.

West Brom also want the majority of the money up front, while Arsenal would like to pay in instalments.

Essentially, if the Gunners ditch their stubbornness, they will get a player they sorely need, something which West Brom clearly know.

ALAN PARDEW ON EVANS

The Baggies boss said on Friday: “Jonny is still at the football club, we still haven’t had a bid put to us that’s anywhere near acceptable.

"Therefore he still remains a West Brom player.

“The only thing I will confirm is what you already know, is that Jonny Evans is a target for other clubs

“We might sell if the price is right. That’s that deal.”

Pardew is clearly hinting at Arsenal to do the right thing and cough up the necessary cash.

After all, is £27m that much for a proven Premier League player these days? Probably not.
