UFC president Dana White teased the possibility of light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier making his return to the heavyweight division after he successfully defeated Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event of UFC 220.That’s primarily because of the fact that Stipe Miocic has steamrolled through the heavyweight division and has defeated every big challenger in his way, breaking the record of most heavyweight championship defences in the progress to put his name into the conversation as one of the greatest heavyweight fighters of all time.

To achieve that, he neutralised the threat that is Francis Ngannou by executing the perfect game plan against someone who many thought is the future of this division. Questions quickly turned to who both men could target next and White’s tease has now turned into an official match.

At UFC 226, we have ourselves a champion vs. champion fight with Cormier battling the baddest man on the planet in Miocic.

What’s interesting to note about this superfight is that they will both serve as head coaches on The Ultimate Fighter, making it the first time two current champions from two different weight classes will coach and fight at the end of the season with filming set to begin next week.

Cormier could find himself in exclusive company should he be the man to dethrone Miocic, as he’d become only the second fighter in UFC history to be a champion in two different weight classes at the same time - the other being Conor McGregor - and only the fifth fighter to be a two-division UFC world champion.

CHAMPION VS. CHAMPION

Interestingly enough, one of the reasons Cormier has stayed away from the heavyweight division is because of Cain Velasquez’s involvement, as they’re both training partners and the former UFC heavyweight champion has had some interesting comments about the fight.

On Twitter, he posted: “Like always, I’m gonna be in the gym everyday to help my brother @dc_mma become the next heavyweight champ at #UFC226.

“Once he wins, things could get interesting. #AndNew #WeAreAKA #GonnaGetMyBeltBack.”

There’s always the possibility that Cormier could relinquish the gold if he can stop the Cleveland native in his tracks, allowing Velasquez to get back in the championship picture as he’s one man many believe is the biggest threat to Miocic.

UFC 226 could end up making UFC 226 one of the biggest events of the year to go along with the 20th anniversary of the company since it was founded, as there are rumours that we could see two other champion vs. champion bouts taking place inside of the T-Mobile Arena.

With Cormier vs. Miocic already confirmed, there’s talk that we could see Cris Cyborg defend her featherweight championship against fellow Brazilian and bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes after weeks of verbal battles.

Along with this, we could see bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw go to flyweight to battle Demetrious Johnson for his crown in what could be a blockbuster night.
