Jamie Redknapp isn’t exactly Gary Neville or Jamie Carragher but he’s done a decent enough job in his role as a Sky Sports pundit over recent years. The 44-year-old, famous for his spells with Liverpool and Tottenham during the 1990s and early 2000s, is always enthusiastic and clearly loves his football. However, there are many football fans that struggle to warm to Redknapp, who does come out with the odd ridiculous statement every now and again.Today, he has managed to amuse - and anger at the same time - Manchester United supporters for offering a rather eyebrow-raising opinion about Marcus Rashford.Redknapp, speaking to Jeff Stelling for Sky Bet, has said that Rashford may need to leave Old Trafford following the signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal.

What Redknapp has said about Rashford

He reckons that Rashford’s playing time will be severely limited following the Chile international’s arrival and doesn’t feel optimistic about his chances of holding a place in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up with the additional competition he now faces.

“I just feel for people like Marcus Rashford,” Redknapp said. “They go down the pecking order and he’s probably thinking to himself ‘where do I fit in now?’.

“It’s great - part of the Premier League is having these players - but I just feel sorry when someone like Marcus Rashford is going to be thinking ‘this is another pathway blocked for me’.

“He might have to go in the end, that young man.”

Stelling then added: “He [wasn’t] getting a regular game before Sanchez arrived.”

Hmm.

Redknapp then continued: “No. It doesn’t help your confidence and every time your in training you think ‘well, I’m not going to be playing on Saturday’.

“And this is a great talent - make no mistake about it. Speak to players that go to the England camp with him and they’re as impressed with him as anybody.

“He probably just needs to go and play some football somewhere and it is a shame but that’s modern day football and that’s why it’s so hard for young British players to get their opportunities.”

Hang on a minute...

Right, the reason why fans are laughing at this statement is because Rashford is one of only three United players to feature in every Premier League game this season alongside David de Gea and Nemanja Matic.

Rashford has played 36 matches in all competitions already this season, scoring 10 goals, so the idea that he didn’t feature enough even before Sanchez’s arrival and won't play much after is, quite frankly, ludicrous.
