Despite a fourth-quarter rally, the Dallas Mavericks eventually fell short against the Miami Heat on Monday night as they were beaten 95-88 at home. The win saw the Heat complete a sweep over the Mavs once again. This is the 14th time in their 30 seasons that they've managed to do so.Even with the loss, the Mavericks were once again able to get a glimpse of their exciting future in the shape of Dennis Smith Jr.The point guard produced more eye-catching plays on the night to add to his growing collection already this year.Dallas fans have not had much to cheer this campaign but Smith still makes it worthwhile for them to turn up every night as he's always got a highlight play up his sleeve. He didn't disappoint them against Miami either as he produced another moment of magic that got the home crowd off their seats. With just less than three minutes to go in the contest and the Mavs trailing by nine, the 19-year-old was matched up against Josh Richardson near the three-point line.In an instant, Smith was able to bypass his defender with a devastating crossover before exploding to the rim for a monster two-handed dunk.

This play once again outlines why there is a clamour for the North Carolina State product to feature in this year's Slam Dunk Contest.

As yet, it's still unclear whether the rookie has received an invitation from the league to take part.

Last week, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reported that he had accepted an invitation but Smith immediately clarified this by confirming that he had not been asked to participate yet, but would love to be involved.

He has shown himself to be one of the most athletic players in the league and adding him to the dunk contest would certainly make it worth watching.

The number nine draft pick didn't shoot the ball particularly well against Miami but he did still manage to end up with a double-double. He finished with 14 points on 4-of-17 shooting, a game-high 10 assists, and two rebounds.

Smith may be awaiting a call to feature in the dunk contest but he will be part of the Rising Stars game representing Team USA.

The youngster is enjoying a solid debut season as he's averaging 14.7 points, 4.8 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.

The Mavericks are already expecting him to be the face of their franchise in the future and the early signs are extremely promising.
