Longtime NFL quarterback Alex Smith will be playing in a new team's uniform next season, as he has been traded to the Washington Redskins form the Kansas City Chiefs.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reports that the Chiefs and Redskins came to an agreement, in principle, to send Smith to Washington in exchange for a 2018 third round draft pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller.

It's expected that the trade agreement between the Chiefs and Redskins will be finalized on Wednesday. There is also a very interesting part of the agreement that Smith is certainly going to be a fan of.

Smith will receive a four-year contract extension worth $94 million, and $71 million of it guaranteed. Smith's previous contract with the Chiefs was originally set to expire at the end of the 2018 season.

Now that Smith has been traded to the Redskins, and has received a huge contract extension all but guaranteeing him the starting role, veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is expected to be allowed to test free agency.

For the past two seasons Cousins has played for the Redskins under the franchise tag and has the opportunity to become the highest-paid player in NFL history via free agency.

In 2017 Cousins made just under $24 million and will for sure garner interest from quarterback-needy teams such as the New York Jets, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals to name a few.

Smith is sitting at 33-years-old and will be playing for the third team of his career in Washington. He started his career playing for the 49ers, who drafted him as a rookie, before being let go and replaced by upstart Colin Kaepernick in 2012.

He was then traded to the Chiefs where he played for the next several years, but now Kansas City seems primed to move on and see what they have in soon-to-be sophomore signal-caller Patrick Mahomes.

It should be interesting to see how Smith's career in Washington plays out, and who Cousins lands with in free agency.

What are your thoughts on Smith being traded to the Washington Redskins and his time in Kansas City being up? And what are your thoughts on the big contract extension he will be receiving from the Redskins? Do you think Smith will be able to lead Washington to a division title, or perhaps even a decent playoff run? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below!
