Arsenal fans have enjoyed an eventful January transfer window, but you get the feeling Mesut Ozil signing a new contract at the club was the biggest coup of the month.

The club announced yesterday that their German talisman had extended his stay at the Emirates Stadium to 2021 and he's reported to be the highest paid player in the Premier League, earning a wage of £350,000-a-week.

The 29-year-old penned on Twitter: "Proud to announce: I signed dat thing….three more years with Arsenal!

"It's been one of the most important decisions of my footballing career and that's why I had to think hard and talk with everyone who's important to me…good things take time!

"In the end I let my heart decide. As I always said, I feel at home here and I'm highly motivated to achieve big things in the next few years. Once a Gunner, always a Gunner!"

Ozil extends his Arsenal stay until 2021

To say Arsenal fans were excited about the re-signing would be putting things mildly. Gooners did, after all, have good reason to think Ozil would take the same path as Alexis Sanchez with his last deal just six months from expiration.

Coupled with the signings of Pierre-Emerick Aubaemayang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, though, and supporters have been pretty satisfied with their business.

It's quite the achievement from Arsene Wenger when you consider the north London club also shipped out their three top goal scorers of the last five seasons - Sanchez, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.

Believe it or not, however, not everybody was happy and Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright gave a very unexpected reaction to Ozil's new contract.

After a fan questioned the fact that Wright was yet to comment on the deal, the Arsenal legend delivered a thoroughly pessimistic verdict on the news. Check out his comment below:

Ian Wright isn't impressed by the reaction

Well then.

It is worth saying that Ozil has come in for criticism on numerous occasions during his time with Arsenal and particularly in big games. So, is Wright the man seeing sense and are supporters just riding a wave of Ozil's impressive, recent form?

One Arsenal supporter has dug up a rather interesting set of comments from Wright back in September and it makes his latest opinion look even more bizarre:

The situation is certainly worth debating yet Wright should probably rejoice in the fact Arsenal at least have the option of the ex-Real Madrid man and that he hasn't been procured by a rival club.

Arsenal fans will undoubtedly be interested to hear him flesh out his theory when he next appears on TV and don't be surprised if he receives quite the backlash.
